Thriving In Between is a free summer gardening and reflection program for 2SLGBTQQIA+ youth aged 14 –17, or 18 -- 25. It’s designed to offer a engaging space for youth who may feel excluded from traditional green spaces or summer programs. Over the course of weekly hands-on workshops, participants will learn practical gardening skills, explore food autonomy, and connect with others in a supportive environment that values care, creativity, and community. We work closely with other urban agriculture groups who will share their knowledge about specific aspects of farming and gardening, which we will then take back to our community garden and practice.
This project is led by a queer facilitator with lived experience of housing precarity and a background in community-based HIV/AIDS peer-support. It was created to reflect the needs of youth who are often overlooked in both environmental and youth programming — especially those navigating the intersections of underrepresentation, marginalization, or isolation.
Each participant will also be invited to keep a reflection journal—in whatever format suits them best—to track their learning, growth, and hopes for the future.
If you support queer or underrepresented youth in your work, I’d love to speak with you about how we can connect and make this program accessible to your community network.
